What is permanent-mould casting?

Permanent-mould gravity casting is a process in which molten metal is poured into a steel mold. As the metal cools, it solidifies and takes the shape on the mould cavity. Cores or pins can be added to create internal cavities and other hollow areas within the part. Molten metal can be poured manually or automatically from the top of the mold. Mould is then opened for the extraction of the part. A release coating is applied to the tooling in order to facilitate part removal.

This process is widely used for industrial and hardware applications.

Advantages of permanent mold gravity casting

  • Permanent mold gravity casting requires significantly less capital investment than high-pressure die casting both in tooling and equipment costs.
  • Permanent moulds provide better repeatability than sand casting or lost-wax casting, while also allowing higher production rates.
  • Better surface finish and higher dimensional accuracy than other gravity casting methods.
  • Because the mould is made of metal, it provides better thermal conductivity than sand or wax moulds, resulting in faster and more uniform cooling.

Disadvantages of permanent-mould gravity casting

  • Higher tooling costs than sand or lost-wax casting
  • Parting lines may require deburring
  • Additional heat treatment may be required to relieve internal stresses in the parts.
