Plastics are widely used for moulding because of their versatility, but they can also be machined to produce precise components. Machinable plastics can differ from injection-moulding plastics as other mechanical properties are necessary for their processing.

Tip:

The data is alphabetically sorted to ease its review.

Remarks:

  1. Tensile Strength: Measures the maximum stress that a material can withstand before breaking while being stretched or pulled.
  2. Flexural Modulus: shows material’s stiffness when it is bent.
  3. Impact Strength: indicate the material’s ability to resist a high-force or shock load without fracturing.
  4. Density: The mass per unit volume of a material. It can be compared to the density of water which is 1.00 g/cm3.
  5. Relative cost: Approximate cost of the material per kilogram, which can vary based on market conditions and supplier.

Disclaimer : above information are only to be used for comparison purposes.

Remark :

Contrary to the injectable plastics raw material which are typically purchased and supplied in pellet form, for machining plastics it is necessary to source raw material in the form of blocks or plates.

Machining plastics will also lead to much more wastes than injection, wastes that are mostly non-reusable in the process, they have to be recycled by other means.
