What is Die Casting?

Die Casting enables high speed production of non-ferrous metal parts. Each part can be produced in just a few seconds. The process involves injecting molten metal at high pressure into a mould. As the metal cools and solidifies in the mould, it takes the shape of the die cavity. This highly automated process allows the same die to be used for more than 100,000 production cycles.

Although die casting was initially developed extensively for the automotive industry, it is now widely used in many other sectors, including electronics and aerospace.

Die casting advantages

  • High-speed production results in very low unit costs compared with many other manufacturing processes.
  • The high pressure allows the production of complex shapes that would be difficult or impossible to achieve using gravity casting.
  • Wall thicknesses of less than one millimetre can be achieved, reducing both component weight and material consumption.
  • Cast parts can achieve high dimensional accuracy, with tolerances in the range of hundredths of a millimetre.
  • The process can provide a good surface finish.
  • High production automation ensures excellent repeatability from one part to the next.

Die casting disadvantages

  • High tooling and set-up costs
  • To improve fluidity and casting performance, die-casting alloys generally contain several alloying elements rather than being pure metals. Depending on the alloy and surface treatment, this can sometimes result in visible surface marks, particularly after black or coloured anodisation. AGC can recommend suitable materials and processes to minimise these cosmetic issues.
  • The need for draft angles, although these can be relatively small.
  • Micro-pores may be present in the material after casting
